Are you getting a great offer or falling for a worldwide marketing stunt?

Black Friday is one of the most anticipated shopping days of the year. Hugely discounted products, hysteric bargain hunters and a manic frenzy to get the best deals possible. Over the years Black Friday has become increasingly popular to the point where people would spend their night camping outside a store to bag a bargain and no one bats an eyelid.

However, is this media manipulation at its finest? Scrolling through Instagram and Facebook this week, we’ve been inundated with advertisements from companies all over the world offering their best Black Friday deals EVER! We have to take a step back and wonder how all these companies can actually discount their products so much that they’re so generously decreasing their profits to give us such a great deal.

Unfortunately, we don’t think this is the case. Following reports, we’ve noticed that the profit margins of larger retailers are actually higher during the ‘Black Friday’ period. The period before Black Friday sees many companies artificially inflating prices of products, this then gives an impression that their Black Friday deals look great in comparison to previous prices.

When you really think about it, Black Friday isn’t the only period where you can ‘grab a deal’. There are so many occasions throughout the year where shoppers can buy discounted products, it’s just the hype around Black Friday draws us in.

Another factor of the complete downfall of Black Friday is the rush to get the product you really desire. News reports all around the world show the arrogant mentality of those who have waited for the shops to open, pushing each other out of the way and playing tug of war with a TV. Some may say this is a biased report of Black Friday shopping, but it’s quite easy to imagine the scenes.

Okay, we’ll stop playing devil’s advocate now. There is always a flip side to things like this. Online shopping on Black Friday can be a treat. It’s a month before Christmas, you can buy all your gifts in one go, you don’t need to fight another being to get the product you want. Essentially, you can sit in your pyjamas and scroll away as much as you like.

However, there will always be a debate surrounding Black Friday and whether the general public are getting the best deals ever or they’re just falling for another marketing stunt, it’s just the way people perceive it.
