Why cyber security and why now?
In this digital age it’s more important than ever to get clued up on cyber security and be aware of what your business needs to implement, to ensure not only the security of your company but also any clients whom you work with are completely secure.
That’s why our Creative Individuals UK team took a trip to the headquarters of UK Fast, an award-winning hosting provider in Manchester to attend Unlocked Events Cyber Security Conference. You never know what to expect at a conference or networking event. We’ve attended our fair share where it hasn’t been worth our time and we’ve not gained any value however UK Fast sure know how to host an event. Not only was the conference so interesting but the refreshments and networking opportunities were undeniably good too! The headquarters of UK Fast are Google-esque with slides, comfy couches and colourful displays, not to mention the staff gym and lounge areas for down time. We arrived at 9am for registration with the first speaker presenting within the first hour. They’d sourced a great selection of speakers from the Director at the National Cyber Security Centre to FC, an ethical hacker and Head of Cyber Research at Raytheon UK. From the moment the first speaker presented we began gaining value as we’d not done enough research on cyber security in the past. We were shown real time case studies of criminal organisations who hacked multi-million pound companies which, straight away, gave us an insight of the importance of cyber security and protecting your business.
One main talking point revolved around phishing emails, something so common and that everyone in the conference had experienced before. If you’re unaware of what phishing emails are, they’re when you’re contacted by what seems like a legitimate company, for example HMRC, when in reality it’s someone trying to access your details. One really handy tip to make you more aware of phishing emails is by taking Google’s quiz which was released in early 2019. It shows you 8 emails and ask whether they’re legitimate or phishing emails and you’ll be quite surprised by the answers! So, we always like to think of the future and consider what challenges lie ahead, that goes for cyber security too. After learning so much at this conference we can implement the best security procedures to protect ourselves and our clients from unwanted hackers. There are questions we have to ask ourselves just as any other business should; how are we going to defend our systems? How will we control access to IT admin accounts? How will we keep our software and services up to date to prevent a breach? What are our authentication methods when accessing our online platforms? As long as we know the basics we can build from there and that goes out to all you business owners too. As technology and our cyber skills grow, our basic knowledge should too and that’s a really good starting point.
